How to shop flea markets like a pro

Provence, France September 10

One thing I absolutely love (and I’d say I’m really good at) is shopping at flea markets. Whether I’m in LA or traveling abroad, I always find incredible gems — from vintage trinkets and artwork to denim, clothing, and some of my favorite jewelry pieces I own. It’s honestly one of my absolute favorite pastimes.

Whenever I’m in Europe, flea markets are at the top of my list — especially in France. Hot take: France has the best flea markets I’ve ever been to. No matter the region, I always make sure to stop by at least one.

On a recent trip, we visited two markets: one in Carpentras and another in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Both were amazing, but L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is truly the crème de la crème of French flea markets.

Ahead is a little diary of my day there, plus my top tips for making the most out of your flea market shopping experience.

 FLEA MARKET SHOPPING TIPS

Arrive early: The earlier you come, the calmer and more enjoyable your experience will be – plus, you’ll get first pick of the best finds.

Bring cash: Most vendors only accept cash, and it also makes negotiating much easier.

Carry extra bags: Tote bags (or even a cute basket, like this one) make it easier to carry all your treasures.

Make a plan: Flea markets can be overwhelming with so much to see. Come with a list or even a Pinterest board of things you’re looking for. It’ll help you stay focused while still leaving room for those unexpected gems.

Don’t worry about luggage space: If you end up buying more than you can carry, have your items shipped home — it’s much easier than lugging them through the airport.

For art lovers: France is especially unbeatable for vintage art, dishware, and table settings — pieces that are rare to find anywhere else in the world.
