My sunset beach picnic guide

Los Angeles, CA September 07

One of my absolute favorite things to do is host a beach picnic during golden hour. It’s the perfect way to unwind, catch up with my besties, and create the sweetest memories.

If you’re planning your own, getting ready comes down to two key steps: curating the ultimate packing list and styling the perfect beach outfit.

Essential Packing List

When it comes to food, ordering takeout is always an easy option, but if you’re like me and love the aesthetic of laying out a good spread, there are a few things you’ll want to bring along.

Start with an outdoor blanket or linen sheet to create a comfortable space to sit, along with a compact cooler to keep your drinks and anything that needs to stay chilled nice and cool. I also love bringing a wooden board for snacks and cloth napkins — not only do they make the setup feel a little more elevated, but you can also use them to help keep everything in place when there’s a little wind.

For food and drinks, keep it simple and low-mess. A charcuterie spread, fresh fruit, bread, your favorite spreads, and a chilled bottle of wine or some soft drinks are all easy options that don’t require too much fuss.

And don’t forget a few pillows or cushions to make the setup extra comfortable.

Setting Up the Space

I like to set up closer to the dunes, which gives you a little protection from the wind and makes the space feel more tucked away. If that’s not an option, though, any spot with a good view will do.

Lay down your blanket or linen sheet, arrange your pillows and cushions, and then start layering your food and drinks. I like to keep everything looking effortless rather than too perfectly arranged — a little undone is part of the charm.

The best part is watching the sun go down while everything starts to take on that warm, golden glow. So dreamy!Ā

The Beach Outfit

When it comes to the outfit, I truly love how neutral pieces look against the beach. There’s something about sandy tones paired with the golden sunlight that makes neutral colors stand out in such a beautiful, effortless way.

On this particular evening, it was a little chilly, so I threw on a lightweight knit with trousers and added a scarf for a little extra texture and personality. I love adding a simple accessory like a scarf because it can make an otherwise minimal outfit feel more intentional without taking away from the effortless beachy feel.
